Reacting to news is a way to express myself on everything published book related. I read a lot of news, and of course I love to share all of those I find interesting on Twitter. Most of the news I share are of course are book related, but I love so many things that I can’t resist posting everything I find fun or useful

For those news I consider most shocking I will now write about them. Will share my point of view and my thoughts.

Good Omens canceled

Good Omens canceled?

Good Omens is a novel written by Neil Gailman and Terry Pratchett. This standalone book had a web series adaptation with the same title on Amazon Prime. Recently, a US Christian group made a petition to cancel Good Omens. But why?

The adaptation is directed by Neil Gailman and Douglas Mackinnon. It is composed of six chapters, having Michael Sheen playing the role of the angel Arizaphale and David Tennant featuring the demon Crowley.

What is Good Omens about?

Good Omens narrates the story of Aziraphale and Crowley, an angel and demon respectively. While supposedly they should hate each other, instead they end up being friends and also collaborating into taking care of the boy who was born to become the Antichrist in an attempt to stop him from eventually destroying the world.

The Divine Plan is almost here, the day where the Earth will be the perfect battlefield for angels and demons to fight and finally decide who shall be victorious. The Armaggedon will begin when the Antichrist finally commands the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. But what if the boy who was supposed to become the Antichrist had been misplaced and both Aziraphale and Crowley had been taking care of the wrong boy for years?

Why is there a petition to cancel Good Omens?

As you see, Good Omens is a comedy about the coming of the End Times. This kind of satire seems not to be of the liking of some US Christian groups who condemn this story for making satanism appear normal.

While writing this post the petition for canceling Good Omens was signed already by 20,839 individuals, if you want to sign it or want to read why they want to cancel Good Omens you can see their petition on their website here.

In this, they complain of depicting Satanists of good people while mocking God in different ways such as being voiced as a woman, an angel and a demon being friends and their purpose of saving the Earth because they were fond of it, or the four riders of the Apocalypse  being portrayed as a group of bikers.

Long story short, this is their complaint:

In the end, this is a denial of Good and Evil: morality and natural law do not exist, just humanitarianism and an ultimately useless creed. This is another step to make Satanism appear normal, light and acceptable. We must show our rejection. Please sign our petition, telling Amazon that we will not stand silent as they destroy the barriers of horror we still have for evil.

Funnily, the novel was published in 1990. Almost twenty years ago! How come there were no complaints until now?

The petition against the wrong platform

Initially, this petition was asking Netflix to cancel Good Omens instead of being addressed to Amazon Prime, which is the true platform to watch this web series.

Netflix took the joke, promising not to make it anymore, see Twitter.

Amazon Prime, continuing the joke,  tweeted at Netflix telling them than if they canceled Good Omens then they, Amazon Prime, would cancel Stranger Things (available on Netflix).

After this, the petitioners corrected this error addressing this petition to Amazon Prime.

Religion and fantasy conflicts

As you see religion and fantasy books sometimes have their ups and downs. Good Omens is not the only novel that has conflicted with religion, other more than famous sagas have had also faced similar confrontations:

His Dark Materials

This trilogy written by Philipp Pullman, which by the way is having its own adaptation by BBC, also had lots of controversies. In this case, some Christian groups considered that Pullman depicted God a merciless Tyrant while the church was an instrument of oppression, this series was even described as “atheism for kids” and also The Catholic Herald, a weekly Catholic newspaper, published this series was “worthy of bonfire”.

It was due to these critics why the first and only movie adaptation of this series, The Golden Compass, doesn’t show the abuse of power in this fictional version of the Church in an effort to avoid such controversy. A fact that wasn’t well received by both the fans and anti-censorship group.

Ironically, despite the attempt to make the film less controversial, the Catholic League called for a boycott of this movie, here are some excerpts:

The Catholic League is calling for a boycott of “The Golden Compass”; the movie opens December 7. It is based on the first book of a trilogy titled, His Dark Materials.

The author of this children’s fantasy is Philip Pullman, a noted English atheist. It is his objective to bash Catholicism and promote atheism. To kids. “The Golden Compass” is a film version of the book by that name, and it is being toned down so that Catholics, as well as Protestants, are not enraged.

We are launching a major educational campaign designed to alert the public to Pullman’s game plan. To that end, we have prepared a booklet, “The Golden Compass: Agenda Unmasked.” It contains snippets of what reviewers have said about the film and the books, as well as revealing comments made by Pullman himself; it also contains a synopsis of the trilogy. In short, the booklet is not what we are saying about Pullman’s work—it is what he and others have said about it.

Pullman represents the new face of atheism: it is aggressive, dogmatic and unrelenting. It is also fueled by hate—by a crusading hatred of all religions, but most especially of ours. His side is counting on our side to lie down and die. He may have experienced little resistance in England, but it’s a different story here.

See full call here.

Given that the Golden Compass’ box office was $372 million having a budget of $180 and even so the film sequels were canceled, seems that they won that time. Even though official communications say the project was canceled because of the disappointing sales in the United States.

Harry Potter

Kids and magic, an easy target. A group of Catholic priests burned several books that in their opinion promoted sorcery, as it could be no other way, a Harry Potter novel was among them.

Will Good Omens have a sequel?

Terry Pratchett and Neil Gailman had the idea of writing a sequel, which was to be called 668—The Neighbour of the Beast. However, after Neil Gailman moved to the United States the sequel of Good Omens was never written.

Since Terry Pratchett died in 2015 at the age of 66, it should be Neil Gailman who would have to write the sequel on its own. As of 2019, Gailman has not announced that he is starting writing a sequel. However, given the success of Amazon’s Prime adaptation, it might help him make a decision?

Harry Potter RPG videogame!

It has been everywhere! A Harry Potter RPG videogame is on the way, and it looks amazing!

This wonderful news was published on Reddit, where a user published the following post “Unannounced Harry Potter RPG has killing and unforgivable spells!” in this he linked to a youtube video where you could see a gameplay of this new Harry Potter videogame. Warner Bros blocked the video to avoid the leakage, but unfortunately (or maybe the opposite) it had already spread all around the internet. A lot of people think that the fact that the video was taken down by Warner Bros just proves that the game is actually being developed, which make sense. Just think about it, if it was a fake video why would Warner Bros want to take it down?

Elden Ring: the collaboration of George R.R Martin and From Software

Amazing news! Days before the E3 2019 some juicy information had been leaked all around the internet: a new videogame ...

The leaked video is still on youtube so you can watch it here:

Funnily, in a previous post, I theorized about the stolen postcard on which J.K Rowling had written a short prequel story of Harry Potter and what would have happened if a true fan had stolen it. Similarly, the attention this videogame has thanks to that leakage will have hinted the producers how hyped Harry Potter fans are with this new videogame. For those fans who are looking for something similar to Harry Potter, here are some book suggestions for you.

What will Harry Potter Magic Awakened be about

This videogame seems to be titled Magic Awakened. However, it seems it’s not the final title yet.

For what is known (which is not much, to be honest) you will be able to create your own character and play in an open world. As you can see in the video you will be to make potions and cast different spells. The story is also unknown but according to the leaked video, we will start this experience in Hogwarts.

There is no release date yet or available Platforms but I will update this post.

According to the leaked images and comments all around the internet, this is an RPG videogame. In this title, you will be able to choose your side, that is, Dark or Light sides. As it usually happens in RPGs you will have different classes to pick. RPG games usually have diverse class roles, such as healers, tanks, damage dealers

How could class roles be adapted into a Harry Potter RPG?

Well why not the  Hogwarts subjects? Just take it this way: in order to create your own character, you must choose the subjects you were good at Hogwarts, depending on your choices you might have a different role. That is, if you picked Defense Against the Dark Arts and Charms, for example, you could be a damage dealer, while if you pick Herbology and Potions you could be a healer. This would be a cool way to create unique and specialized roles, somehow each subject providing different abilities and spells. Just to be clear, this is pure speculation.

Just think about the possibilities! you pick the transfiguration spell and you can transform into an animal, or maybe pick Care of Magical Creatures and you could summon a magic companion! With Alchemy you could transmute substances for your advantage… see what I mean?

Well, what would happen if you pick Muggle Studies or History of Magic? I’ll leave these two for you!

What is expected from a Harry Potter RPG videogame

A lot actually! a lot of questions are yet unanswered: Will we be able to play Quidditch? Will the sorting Hat choose our House? Regarding this one, a YouTuber had a great idea, suggesting the Hat sorted us using the info available in our Pottermore profiles. Will we be able to visit other places aside from Hogwarts? Hogsmeade is expected, but what else?

What about you, what would you like this Harry Potter RPG videogame to include? Also, before you leave, want to know which animal would your Patronus be? check it here!

Harry Potter prequel

The stolen Harry Potter prequel: a What if

Did you hear of the of the stolen Harry Potter postcard two years ago? for those who didn’t, here is a small excerpt of the original article posted on Mugglenet (see here).

A rare piece of Harry Potter memorabilia has been stolen in a high-profile theft. During a Birmingham break-in during the month of April, a postcard hand-penned by J.K. Rowling featuring an 800-word story about James and Sirius was stolen, along with some jewelry.

This postcard was won for 25 thousand pounds (32,35$ thousand) in a raising funds auction and was stolen in 2017. The same J.K Rowling asked the fans not to buy it but, let’s be honest here, that postcard is such a valuable item for a fan so there is no way the burglar didn’t have tons of offers to purchase it. What about you, would you have bought such postcard if it was offered to you?

A what-if

But this news is pretty old, why bring it back if nothing new has happened? they didn’t find the burglar nor recovered the postcard. So why this post?  well, as I posted this  Tweet yesterday,  it was just a joke, then I started thinking…

Wottaread Tweet

What if the burglar was a hardcore Harry Potter fan? somebody who loved the series and just had to get such postcard no matter what. When I posted that tweet I realized how this would have been different if the burglar was somebody obsessed with this saga.  Someone whose love for Harry Potter had turned into fanatism. Which by the way, I don’t think is the case since he (or she)  stole some jewels too. It seems to me that the robber just thought the postcard would be worth a lot of money in the black market and since the stealing mode was on he also got the jewels.

But let’s assume it was a Harry Poter hardcore fan. Somebody who stole it only to make a demand: a Harry Potter prequel. Of course, why would the police or J.K Rowling herself accept the demands of a burglar? no reason at all. Nonetheless, it wouldn’t be the burglar’s demand what would pull the trigger but the fan reactions.

The Deadpool movie precedent

It would be similar to what happened to the Deadpool movie, a project that was discarded by Fox until test footage was leaked on the Internet.  People loved it and, as a result, the Deadpool movie not only exists but raised as much as most of  the MCU movies despite having a way lower budget (58$ million, just compare it with Guardians of the Galaxy 232.3$ million budget, which by the way grossed less than Ryan Reynolds’ movie)

See what I mean? it was the fans, and that filtered test footage, that made Deadpool real. I just thought how unusual it would have been if such robbery had been made in order to make such a demand and had led to a Harry Potter prequel.

Would a Harry Potter prequel be a success?

Honestly, I don’t have the slightest doubt. People would love to read about Hogwarts again, Fantastic Beasts tries to get some hold of it but, let’s face it, it’s simply not the same. Don’t get me wrong, Grindelwald’s story is decent, but a story about Harry Potter’s parents has so much potential. We know how their sad story ends, but still, we want to know every single detail, how Lily fell in love with James Potter; the adventures of Moony, Prongs, Wormtail, and Padfoot or, why not, the rise of You-Know-Who, a younger Dumbledore… everything about this wizarding world!

Now, I assume J.K Rowling knows that writing a prequel about James and Lily Potter, Sirius Black, Snape, etc would be a Bestselling saga but I guess maybe she wants to write about other things. Which is totally understandable of course. True, the book sales would be shocking, but I don’t think it’s a matter of money anymore (if it was at any point) since she is one of the richest British celebrities in the world.

At least a movie series?

Even so, if J.K Rowling doesn’t want to write anymore about Harry Potter why not a movie series then? just like Fantastic Beasts. I see two ultra potential movie sagas here. One, the story of James Potter, his friends, and his wife. But also, let’s not forget about Lord Voldemort (yeah, I dare say his name!). What about a saga telling us about the Dark Lord? It would be such a different approach and yet so interesting. Hogwarts from the point of view of Tom Riddle, a kid chosen to be in Slytherin who would eventually raise as the most powerful wizard ever. My god, make this real, please.

Hope you enjoyed this article, If you are craving for some magic at this point you can check these Harry Potter book suggestions. Keep reading.
