Let’s know a bit more about this series
This story centers on Horatio Hornblower, a fictional Royal Navy officer who takes part in the Napoleonic Wars. The series shows how Hornblower, thanks to his skill and daring, gains promotion in the Navy while surviving to different adventures.
Horatio Hornblower was inspired by the most notorious navy officers of that period, such as is the case of Admiral Lord Nerson, Lord Cochrane, or Sir Edwan Pellew. Lots of the events taking place in the books are based on official reports of the Royal Navy during those times.
You will find Horatio Hornblower a relatable and lovable character since he is brave, skilled and also smart; but at the same time he is a bit reserved and he always feels both unhappy and lonely. No matter how much he is admired by other members of the Royal Navy, he will always have some self doubt.
Adaptations
There have been several adaptations of this series. There was a movie titled Captain Horatio Hornblower that was released in 1951. And there was also a tv series titled Hornblower (which went from 1998 to 2003). It has also had two radio series.
